POPPENTHEATER
DAMIET VAN DALSUM, NETHERLANDS
The Poppentheater (puppet theatre) was founded by Damiet van Dalsum in 1967. Firstly situated on the Blindenliedengasthuissteeg in Dordrecht, Holland, the theatre moved to the Buddinghplein where it had a temporary location at the Voorstraat 125 and ended up at the Aardappelmarkt.
The little theatre has room for 40 people and is simultaneously used as a studio to try out new performances. Besides in her own theatre, Damiet plays everywhere, in Holland as well as abroad. From Schagen to New York. From Winschoten to Taipeh. From Middelburg to Mexico-city.
First only handpuppets were used, until in 1980 marionettes were introduced. Up until that time Damiet only performed for children. Her first adult performance was 'Op het Oog' which has been played a lot abroad, in festivals. She then experimented a lot with shadow figures and other materials. For Damiet, the essence of puppetry is to pass on movement, emotions and sense through materials onto the audience. Next to performing herself, she has directed plays/groups in other countries such as Germany and Taiwan. She has also been involved in educational projects with artists and teachers in Holland, Belgium, Bela Russia and Taiwan. In the period 1997 to 2001 she was the artistic director of the State Puppet theatre in the town of Magdeburg, Germany. Every year she organises the puppet theatre festival in Dordrecht, Holland.
For JIPF 2006, Damiet will be performing Club Medea
